DETAILS
INTENSE PULSED LIGHT AND LOW-LEVEL LIGHT THERAPY
Intense Pulsed Light and Low-Level Light Therapy is a modern, non-surgical eye care service designed to improve eyelid health and tear quality. This combined treatment targets the underlying causes of dry eye disease, especially meibomian gland dysfunction. As a result, many patients experience clearer vision, better comfort, and reduced eye irritation.
WHAT THIS SERVICE DOES
This therapy works by delivering controlled light energy to the eyelids and surrounding skin. First, intense pulsed light reduces abnormal blood vessels and inflammation along the eyelid margin. Next, low-level light therapy gently stimulates the meibomian glands. Therefore, the glands can produce healthier oils that slow tear evaporation and protect the eye surface.
WHO MAY BENEFIT FROM THIS TREATMENT
Your ophthalmologist may recommend this service if you experience persistent dry eye symptoms despite regular drops. In particular, it helps patients with the following conditions:
1. Meibomian gland dysfunction
2. Evaporative dry eye disease
3. Blepharitis and eyelid inflammation
4. Ocular rosacea affecting the eyes
5. Burning, gritty, or fluctuating vision
HOW THE PROCEDURE IS PERFORMED
Before treatment, protective eye shields are placed for safety. Then, intense pulsed light is applied in short pulses along the lower eyelids and upper cheek area. Afterward, low-level light therapy is delivered using a specialized mask placed over closed eyes. Throughout the session, you remain awake and comfortable. Most treatments last about 20 to 30 minutes.
WHAT PATIENTS MAY FEEL
Most patients describe the sensation as warm and relaxing. Some notice mild heat or light flashes during intense pulsed light delivery. However, discomfort is uncommon. After treatment, temporary redness or warmth of the skin may occur, but it usually resolves within hours. Importantly, normal activities can often resume the same day.
SAFETY AND MEDICAL CONSIDERATIONS
This combined light therapy has a strong safety profile when performed by trained eye care professionals. Nevertheless, it may not suit patients with certain skin conditions, active infections, or photosensitive disorders. For this reason, a full eye and skin assessment is completed before treatment. Ongoing medical supervision ensures safe and appropriate care.
WHY THIS COMBINATION MATTERS
Using intense pulsed light together with low-level light therapy addresses both inflammation and gland dysfunction. Consequently, treatment outcomes are often more durable than single-modality care. By improving tear quality rather than masking symptoms, this service supports long-term eye comfort and visual stability.
