Conjunctival Melanoma
Malignant melanoma of the conjunctiva presents as
a raised, pigmented or nonpigmented lesion that appears in adult life. This
lesion is uncommon but potentially lethal. It can arise in previously
unblemished and unpigmented regions (approximately 10% of cases), from a
preexisting nevus (approximately 20% of cases), or from the flat spreading
pigmentation of primary acquired melanosis with atypia (60-70% of cases).
Iris Leiomyoma
Leiomyoma of the iris is a
rare, benign intraocular smooth muscle tumor. The tumor often originates from
the sphincter or less commonly from the dilator muscles. Recent studies have
found that leiomyomas occur much less frequently than previously reported. It is
believed strongly that iris leiomyoma has been previously overdiagnosed.
Stricter diagnostic criteria involving electron microscopy and
immunohistopathology have been added as new standards for reporting.
What is retinoblastoma?
Retinoblastoma is the most common ocular
malignancy in childhood. The most common presenting sign is leukocoria (white
pupil), which is usually first noted by family members and described as a cat’s
eye appearance. Other cases present with strabismus or squint. The diagnosis
depends on a thorough dilated retinal examination. The major goal of treatment
is to save the patient’s life, and secondarily to salvage the eye and vision if
possible. Although enucleation is a major form of treatment, other treatment
modalities exist today. The choice of treatment depends on size, location and
tumor extent.
