The word chalazion originated from the
Greek word for 'hailstone'. It is a lipogranuloma of either a Meibomian gland or
a Zeis gland, the former being characteristically a hard and painless lid
nodule, while the latter being a marginal or superficial lid nodule.

A chalazion results from the accumulation
of lipid breakdown products from retained glandular secretions, possibly from
bacterial enzymes, result in a mass of granulation tissue and inflammation.
This granulomatous process distinguishes a
chalazion from an internal or external hordeolum (primarily a pyogenic process
leading to a pustule), although the one condition can result in the other
condition.
Clinically, the single (rarely multiple)
nontender, firm nodule is located deeply within the lid or in the tarsal plate.
Eversion of the lid may reveal the dilated meibomian gland.
