It is the instillation of a pharmaceutical
agent in the form of eye drops in order to enlarge the pupillary diameter.

What are the indications for
dilation?
It may be performed for either of three major
reasons: cycloplegic refraction;
evaluation of the crystalline lens;
evaluation of the posterior pole (vitreous,
retina, choroid, optic nerve)

Any new patient.
-
Established patient every 2-4 years.
-
Any new patient with flashes or floaters.
-
Unexplained vision loss.
-
Any patient with progressive retinal disease
(e.g., macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy)
-
Any patient with systemic disorders that can
affect the eye (e.g., systemic hypertension)
-
History of ocular trauma.
-
History of chronic uveitis.
-
Any child under 6 years (with cycloplegia)
-
Once yearly if history of ocular surgery.

Moderate to high myopia:
-
Any patient with history of peripheral
retinal degeneration.

Any patient with developing cataract.
-
All hyperopes or anisometropes (include
cycloplegic refraction)
