Flourescein Angiography (FA)
Fluorescein
angiography (fluorescein - the type of dye that is used; angiogram - a study
of the blood vessels) is an extremely valuable test that provides
information about the circulatory system of the back of the eye not
attainable with a routine examination. FAs are useful for evaluating many
eye diseases that affect the retina.
IndoCyanine Green angiography (ICG)
ICG
angiography uses IndoCyanine Green dye which fluoresces in the infrared
(non-visible) light. These wavelengths have the ability to penetrate the
retinal layers making the circulation in deeper layers, particularly the
choroid, visible when photographed with an infrared sensitive camera. The
images from the special camera are then digitized and stored in a computer.
Ophthalmoscopy
An ophthalmoscope is an instrument used to
examine the retina and vitreous. Ophthalmoscopy requires dilating the
pupils with drops to give the doctor the best view inside the eye.
Optical Coherence Tomography
(OCT)
Optical Coherence Tomography, or OCT, is a
non-contact, noninvasive imaging technique used to obtain high resolution
cross-sectional images of the retina. It is analogous to ultrasound B-scan
imaging except that coherent light rather than sound waves is used in order
to obtain a much higher longitudinal resolution of approximately 10µm in the
retina.
Ocular Ultrasound
The eye can be further examined with ultrasound,
employing the same principles used in fetal ultrasound, although on a
smaller scale. The sound delivered is reflected at different tissue
interfaces and the reflected beam is received by the transducer. The
reflected sound waves are analyzed to give further information about ocular
structures. The transducer itself may be placed directly on the eye, after
topical anesthesia, or on the eyelid, depending on the desired procedure.
